Sixteen

Avery set out on the trail behind her cabin. It was the night before Thanksgiving, and she was supposed to have gone with Cody and his friends to the bar. However, as she’d stood in front of her closet, trying to decide what to wear, she realized she didn’t want to go, not without Jax. Then she’d chided herself for being so foolish. The man had barely spoken to her in days.

Still, she’d called Cody and broken the news.

“Sorry, but I changed my mind about going tonight.”

“What are you going to do instead?”

“I’m going hiking.”

Cody chuckled. “You and Jax, I swear.”

Hearing his name gave her a start. “What about Jax?”

“He didn’t want to go out tonight, either. Don’t be surprised if you run into him on the trail.”

Avery tried to tamp down her enthusiasm. “Have fun and be careful driving.”

“Yes, Mom,” he teased.

After she hung up, she took out her new hiking gear and got dressed. The temperature was hovering in the low forties, but she wore long johns under her clothes, just in case. She tugged on wool socks, hiking boots, and a weatherproof jacket and studied herself in the mirror.

Some of her “city” friends would probably laugh at the getup, but she liked what she saw. This was the real Avery—the girl who loved the outdoors before she’d acclimated to city life. She was getting back to her roots, and it felt damn good. If only her love life would fall into place so easily.

She went into the kitchen and filled her backpack with water, snacks, and a flashlight, recalling when Jax had insisted she wear his hat with the light on it. The memory made her smile, and she wished they were still on friendly terms, or more if she were being honest.

Since they’d kissed, she couldn’t stop thinking about it, the way he’d held her firmly yet gently, his lips parting to make way for her tongue, his arousal pressed against her. Whenever she thought about it, she became aroused herself.

Then, as if it that weren’t enough fodder for her fantasies, she envisioned him naked, standing outside on his deck in the moonlight, beads of water glistening on his skin. He’d been looking out at the mountains when she’d snuck up on him, but when he’d seen her, he hadn’t bothered to cover himself. Even in the semi-darkness, she’d seen the outline of his manhood and noted how impressive it was.

For the past several days, she’d gone to bed with those images in mind, but she had created a very different ending in her head…

Instead of being angry with her for showing up uninvited, he stalked toward her and kissed her again, cupping her face in his hands and tilting it up for better access.

Her nipples pebbled under her sweatshirt as they rubbed against his bare chest. She felt his heat through her clothes, and suddenly she wanted to be naked too.

“Jax…”

“Hmm?”

“Let’s go inside.”

He scooped her into his arms, opened the back door, and carried her inside.
